Mariachi Estrellas de Chula Vista of San Diego has 14 members headed
by Mark Fogelquist and Rep Missael. Appearing at all major mariachi
festivals and conferences in the U.S. and in Mexico. The group
won numerous awards and competitions including Grand
Champion twice at the Albuquerque Conference and five First
Place Trophies (in six appearances) at the San Juan Capistrano
Competition. In 2010 Mariachi Chula Vista received the coveted
Galardón del Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán as the best foreign
mariachi at Encuentro Internacional del Mariachi in Guadalajara.
The group was also honored by the Music Educator’s National
Conference as the first student mariachi to appear at a national
conference, as well as the Smithsonian Institution and,
the New York Times.
In 2011 a group of Mariachi Chula Vista graduates approached
Fogelquist about organizing an alumni mariachi. This was the
beginning of Mariachi Estrellas de Chula Vista. In June 2013,
Fogelquist retired from public school teaching and Mariachi
Chula Vista merged with Mariachi Estrellas de Chula Vista.
During the past three years the group has performed at more
than 600 events, large and small. Among the highlights are:
First Place at the 2014 Mariachi Spectacular Mariachi
Competition in Albuquerque, New Mexico, First Place at
2012 Por Amor a Mi Tierra competition in Guadalajara, and
featured appearances at mariachi festivals in Albuquerque,
Santa Barbara, Wenatchee (Washington), Victorville, Imperial
Valley, Rosarito, Mexicali, Tecate, Tijuana, and Ensenada Baja
California.
